Types of Hepatitis
In a general sense, hepatitis simply means "inflammation of the liver" and though there are several different causes, it's likely that most people are thinking only about viral hepatitis. However, it's good to understand all the different types because, though they have different causes, they can all lead to dangerous complications such as liver cancer and cirrhosis.
Viral Hepatitis and the Five Viruses that Cause It
Viral hepatitis is a liver disease that is caused by exposure to one of the five hepatitis viruses. Each virus is named after a letter of the alphabet, hepatitis A through E. Though other viruses can cause hepatitis, only five are considered hepatitis viruses.
Autoimmune Hepatitis is a disease of the liver caused by the body's immune system. This is a type of hepatitis not caused by viruses and is not contagious.
The liver is responsible for filtering the blood of toxins, such as digested drugs. Even though these drugs may be helpful or necessary, sometimes they can damage the liver and cause hepatitis.
Too much alcohol, such as wine, beer and liquor, can cause liver damage called alcoholic hepatitis. This disease is usually reversible if treated early.
What Is Hepatitis E?
Hepatitis E is one of five hepatotrophic viruses that causes acute viral hepatitis. As a disease it is self-limited, causes acute gastrointestinal illness, and is spread by the fecal-oral route. It's very similar to hepatitis A in how it is spread, but similar to all acute viral hepatitis infection in symptoms.
