Definition: A specialist in diagnosing and treating liver disease. Usually this person is a board certified gastroenterologist with a clinical and research focus in liver disease. Perhaps this confirms the obvious, but there is interesting research that suggests hepatologists achieve better treatment results for their patients with liver disease. However, there may not be practicing hepatologists in your area. In this case, a board-certified gastroenterologist can provide expert care.
