Definition: An antigen is a substance that stimulates the immune system. This substance can be part of a living organism (bacterium or parasite) but can also be a virus or a chemical toxin. When an antigen stimulates the immune system, antibodies are produced that are specific to that antigen, and powerful white blood cells appear to destroy the invading antigen.
