Nitazoxanide is a new antiviral drug that makes it difficult for the hepatitis C virus to copy itself. By interfering with viral replication, and reducing the viral load, the body's immune system has a better chance to clear the virus. Studies show that nitazoxanide significantly reduces viral load and has good safety and tolerability results. To learn more about this drug and manufacturer, here is the March 2, 2009 study press release.
Though the results are strong, further study will need to continue. As noted above, the study evaluated patients with genotype 4 infection. This is the predominant virus type in Egypt, which has the highest infection rate in the world, so this treatment could be a public health windfall for them. However, other places have predominantly different genotypes and more study is necessary to see if this triple therapy is as effective for them. In the United States, HCV genotype 1 is the major type, with genotypes 2 and 3 being a distant second and third. We'll have to wait and see, but not for long. The drug is currently in phase II clinical trials in the United States for hepatitis C patients with genotype 1 infection.

Last week my husband started treatment using a combination of Nitazoxanide (Alinia), Ribavirin and Peginterferon. It’s not a study. Nitazoxanide was recently approved.
He has genotype 4. He tried combo therapy in 2003. At the six month point, he was a responder. But by the end of treatment he had relapsed.
I am journaling his experience. For anyone that might benefit, the address is: http://www.myhusbandhashepc@blogspot.com.
